Les Blumenthal, who writes for McClatchy's Washington state newspapers, has been a working journalist in Washington, D.C., for 19 years, first as the original Northwest regional writer for The Associated Press and since 1990 for the McClatchy Washington Bureau. He concentrates on issues involving the Pacific Northwest for The (Tacoma) News Tribune, the Tri-City Herald, The Olympian and The Bellingham Herald.
He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1971 and began his career with The Spokesman-Review in Spokane. He then worked for the AP in Seattle, where he directed the bureau's coverage of the 1980 eruptions of Mount St. Helens, and in Springfield, Ill., where he was AP's chief political correspondent in Illinois.
Since coming to Washington, he's written widely about major environmental issues from the spotted owl to old-growth forests.
