Fallout on Main Street: Mailman Speaks His Mind
By Mike Fritz

PATRICK CARROLL, US POSTAL WORKER: I never thought America would come to this, but it has, and now we just have to deal with it. I’ve been a mailman for 23 years now. It’s been a steady job, and it’s not that bad for a regular person. But you’ve got to deal with the elements. That’s one worst thing. Other than that, you know, it’s been pretty good to me. You know, I can’t complain. My wife and I both work. We have three kids. And we just live from week to week trying to make ends meet. If my wife were to lose her job, then we’d be scared, or if I were to lose my job, then we’re scared. You know, what are you going to do? Everybody’s been affected, I think. All the companies are. Now all of our competitors have been affected. You know, UPS, FedEx, they’ve all been affected. Mail volume has dropped drastically, and they’re trying to cut back. So they’re cutting back on routes, taking routes out of stations, and other people have to absorb it. So, eventually, people are going to lose their jobs, I think. We’ve got people struggling right here in America, and we’re lending money all over the place, billions of dollars here, billions of dollars there. You know. And then we go bomb a country like Iraq, and then we spend our money to rebuild it. I think, you know, get out of there. Let those people deal with them people. That’s it. We have nothing to do with them. And we’re the ones that are going to be paying for it. I don’t agree with that at all. Why should we bail out finance corporations? They won’t bail out some local shop in town here. I mean, if anything, the politicians got to stop bickering and get things together. This generation’s going to have to take care of the deficit that we have now. I mean, thank God, you know, my wife and I both work, and I think we’ll be able to get through it, you know, making your cutbacks and things like that. But other than that, some people just aren’t going to make it.
