June 18 – TRNN Senior Editor Paul Jay talks to Susan Manuel, Chief Peace and Security Section at the UN, about the flailing military support for UN peacekeepers in Darfur.
Manuel says that though the UN Security authorized a troop force in 2006 with the African Union. However, Manuel says that contributing countries to the peacekeeping missions never gave enough needed troops or military equipment. UN peacekeeping missions must be approved by the occupied country, and in the case of Sudan, the government agreed to only accept support from contributing countries within Africa.
