In an exclusive interview with The Anti-Media, March Against Monsanto Founder Tami Canal talked about the global anti-Monsanto movement started last year, how far it has come, and where she hopes it will go. She says Saturday’s world-wide protests will mark the largest March Against Monsanto event to date. Image credit: rt.com
The Anti-Media: What is the expected turnout for Saturday? How many countries are participating?
Tami Canal: The 3rd global March Against Monsanto (MAM) is expected to be the biggest one yet. With 43 countries on 6 continents, MAM has coordinated 366 official events, with countless others not officially registered.
AM: Has interest in March Against Monsanto grown since the first march in May 2013?
TC: The interest and awareness has grown tremendously this year. We have seen many positives in the movement this year including the recent legislature in Vermont as well as the 2 Oregon counties who truly battled the Goliath biotech industry and overcame the odds and financial power of companies like Monsanto to pass a GMO ban. In addition, big corporations like Walmart are realizing the people do not want toxic food, and the shift can be felt as more of a move towards organic is happening.
AM: Has the mission evolved, and if so, how?
TC: The mission has definitely grown. What began as outrage at the failure of Prop 37 has turned into a global movement to educate against all fallacies of Monsanto. From Agent Orange to Monsanto’s pending patents directly affiliated with weather modification to the gross government corruption, MAM has evolved to expose all the insidious tentacles that Monsanto possesses.
AM: What impact do you think it’s having on Monsanto?
TC: I can’t state for sure what kind of impact MAM has on Monsanto, but they know we are here. I really hope they know we aren’t going away and I hope the impact of the world speaking out against them might have some effect on their moral compass. However, their crimes against humanity have gone on for decades, so it may seem assuming to think that the demands of the world may have had an ethical impact on the company somehow. Time and again, profit over people has been the corporation’s mindset.
AM: How has your life changed since beginning March Against Monsanto?
TC: Life has been busy since the creation of MAM last year. The incredible MAM admin team as well as the thousands of volunteers and marchers all over the world have truly become a force to reckon with. I believe MAM leaves people with tangible hope in what seems like an impossible situation at times. The world is standing up to biotech and together we will take back our right to clean food and a sustainable planet.
