TRNN caught up with Bill Nye at the March for Science on Earth Day

Story Transcript

MAN: Well, there’s this myth that’s developed around carbon dioxide that it’s a pollutant. But you and I both exhale carbon dioxide with every breath. So each of us emits about two pounds of carbon dioxide a day. So are we polluting the planet? Carbon dioxide is a perfectly natural gas, it’s just like water vapor. It’s something that plants love, they grow better with more carbon dioxide and you can see the greening of the earth already from the additional carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. BILL NYE(?): It’s irrepsonsible to show a climate change denier next to two of us concerned about the environment ’cause it looks like it’s about even, but it’s not. It’s a 100 to 1. So that guy also, if you watched the interview is, due respect, is a real throwback and he’s living in the past. Saying plants absorb carbon dioxide, therefore, having the world warm extraordinarily fast faster than ever in the geologic history of the earth is not important. It’s irrelevant in a way, but it’s very troubling because those guys have been able to introduce the idea that scientific uncertainty of a couple of percent is the same as plus or minus a 100%. And that’s just wrong, objectively wrong. The ocean is getting bigger ’cause it’s getting warmer. When things get warm they expand. So places like Galveston, Texas, Miami, Miami Beach, Norfolk, Virginia, they’re going to have this much water on the floor and people are going to leave. And when you have that much water you’re going to have insects and disease and swamp-like conditions in places where the ecosystem hasn’t been that way traditionally and things are going to change very fast. And it’s going to be expensive. Careful what you wish for, other countries will retaliate and then it’s going to be like a tariff on us. It’s called an international agreement not an international do what you want. You have to have some rules everybody. In the U.S. we’ve all agreed to drive on the right. You can’t have everybody just driving anywhere they want. It’s interesting to note that it’s unconstitutional. Article 1, Section8 of the U.S. Constitution. The phrase is “Promote the progress of science and useful arts.” And I believe useful arts in the 18th century meant architecture, city planning, drainage planning and crafting of ploughs and farm equipment and the sort of mechanical engineering, civil engineering works were considered the useful arts in those days. So think of it that way. You can hate me, you can hate the marchers, you can hate everything, but it’s in the constitution. The progress of science and usesful arts. We’re marching. I don’t think the way the current administration is going about things is sustainable. If you look at the electoral map as preidicted when only millennial aged people vote, everything goes the other way. And I think the conservatives who are advocating these extraordinary anti-climate, anti-environment policies know that and they’re working as fast as they can to put regulations in place or destroy regulations before they get overwhelmed by more enlightened voters. So let’s just try to move it ahead today. Let’s go. Let’s change the world. ————————- END
