Carol Stickman is a staff attorney at Legal Services for Prisoners With Children in San Francisco and an attorney for the prisoners in the Pelican Bay federal class action lawsuit, Ashker v. Governor. At LSPC, Carol developed relationships with prisoners in solitary confinement, helped organize the Prisoner Hunger Strike Solidarity coalition, and provided support for prisoners on hunger strike in 2011. Ashker v. Governor developed from the hunger strikes and challenges prolonged solitary confinement. The case settled last year and is in a two-year monitoring period. Her contributions to the suit included working with the mental health experts. She is now working on the issue of sleep deprivation at the Pelican Bay SHU.
