Freddie Gray and the Baltimore UprisingEDDIE CONWAY: I'm Eddie Conway, a former political prisoner, served 44 years in prison in the State of Maryland.

Prior to that, I was a member of the Black Panther Party, and in 1968 I was here in Baltimore, Maryland, when they had the riot that resulted from the assassination of Martin Luther King. A hundred major cities exploded. The city virtually was shut down for several days. A tremendous amount of damage was done. Riots spread throughout the whole, entire city.

The conditions 44 years later, after I got out, were worse. And probably a year after I got out, Freddie Gray was beaten to death, and an uprising occurred in Baltimore. And if I had to make a judgment of the difference, if the riot in 1968 was a ten, the uprising around Freddie Gray, was a one.

I was in the funeral of Freddie Gray, the memorial service for Freddie Gray, and there were thousands of people there, and there were leaders from all over the world, and from all levels of government.

And when the rumor was spread through police networks that there was going to be an incident out in the street, it was clear then, that they were calling for some sort of activity. Because they deliberately wanted to have something to report, other than the thing that was actually important at that time. And that was the beating death, by six police, of an innocent black man.
