As the "official" debate shifts away from single payer type plans, an increasing amount of people across the United States are showing their support for that model. Dr. Flowers, a co-chair for PNHP and a single payer advocate, explains why single payer would be more beneficial then market-based plans. Produced by Ania Smolenskaia

There will be a major media discussion on healthcarewith President Obama. (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/HealthCare/) The majority of Americans are hoping single-payer healthcare advocates will be allowed to attend.

the OTHER HALF of my truncated comment (exactly why can't we format into paragraphs & include an **entire** comment? its irritating as all hell) ... Canadian system from a Harper NeoCon: its was about learning how to sell Canadians on American healthcare industries. mainly by dismantling the Canadian WILL to provide it. What does the US sell? American Propaganda for American 'interests'.

Interview with Margaret Flowers, Tuesday, May 12 2009 http://jefffarias.podbean.com/2009/05/12/the-jeff-farias-show-51209 THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH HARPER & IGGY IS THAT THEY WANT TO SELL CANADA TO AMERICAN CORPORATISTS: including our healthcare. US culture treats healthcare like people's illnesses are a resource for 'harvesting' & they're spending millions to undermine the Canadian healthcare system to 'enlarge' their marketing population for private clinics, overpaid doctors, health insurance... we're not people to these bastards, we're 'resources', like trees or the other industries that NAFTA is trying to kill in Canada. Canadians have more in common with Iraq & Latin America than the USA. why? we're getting raped, too. Just like Columbia & the other 'free trade' victims. Ask yourself: why did Obama sit in a hotel room in Denver @ the DNC & have a chat with Harper's Health Minister? because it wasn't about Obama learning how to IMPLEMENT a Canadi

Rights, too, are believed to belong, justifiably to every person. Then the question is, doesn't every person have the right to good health? Is it morally acceptable to limit health to the "well-heeled"? We have to ask ourselves this question. Then we need open dialog on how best to attain the service. Not for Profit seems appropriate

WarrenMetzler: 'The only human rights are the freedom for each person to achieve what is that person's potential.' If I am not free of illness, I can no longer exercise the freedom to achieve my full potential.

Hypna 2009-06-22

When people begin declaring things such as education, food and shelter, and healthcare a human right they are abusing the entire concept of what a moral right is. A right is true under any and all circumstances. All of these things are demands upon another person. They are called charity. We have to be intellectually honest about the subject if we're going to have any meaningful discussion.

TYPO ALERT: I am NOW making a donation to TRNN, (replace "not" with "now" below.)

markmason 2009-06-22

Access to physicians and to medications is controlled by private, for-profit corporations. As we all know, health care is a life-or-death matter. We're in the richest nation on the planet. Moving to a single-payer system would cost the nation nothing--not a dime, due to the massive wasteful overhead within the for-profit system. How can we permit a few corporations control who lives or dies this year, and next? Democracy is not a spectator sport. I've sent letters to my doctors this week, and I'm not making another donation to TRNN. No one told me or asked me to say this. The bankers ran off with our money and our jobs, but let's not allow the medical and pharmaceutical giants to steal our health. Please consider writing letters to your physicians, and donating to TRNN.

Well, I'm not sure how precisely to differentiate between well-being and 'authentic' well-being, but this concept of the value of a human life being wholly determined by the market is, at least for me, disturbing.

If we were talking about building a house with a hammer and nails, and the tools and equipment a carpenter might use to accomplish that end, instead of 'single payer' there would be nothing wrong with saying that they 'did not know how to use their tools to construct a house'. But when it comes to politicians who cannot get us universal health care using the political process..we say that 'Universal Health Care' cannot be built. I say that they cannot do the job they were elected for because they are mired in the corruptions of their own greed.

WarrenMetzler 2009-06-21

I want to add. No doctor who wants to do a good job is satisfied working with insurance reimbursement; government, private, hmo etc. Because all such set ups progressively restrict all treatments which are not total status quo; and status quo treatment don't provide authentic health. No ill person who desires authentic health, genuine well-being in every area of her life, is satisfied with the treatment experience present under any insurance scheme. Stop acting like single payer would provide authentic well-being. It never has, doesn't now, and never will.

WarrenMetzler 2009-06-21

It is fundamental nonsense to claim that health care is a human right. The only human rights are the freedom for each person to achieve what is that person's potential. All insurance; life, health, disability, renter's, automobile, is an attempt to have a third party pay for your problems. It never works, has never worked, and never will work. The solution is to find an approach to health care that can be affordable to all with a job, paying out of their own pockets. Such a system exists, well-being medicine, but most people don't want it because it challenges their preferred (but false) views of themselves.

pmccarthy002 2009-06-21

I appreciate and respect Dr. Flowers sacrifices and hard work towards forwarding the goal of a single-payer system for our country. To most of us here, it seems evident that a single-payer system would allow for greater efficiency and expediency, and be much more ethical. It's embarrassing being a US citizen and having to acknowledge the strong relation here between someone's economic class, longevity, and overall healthiness. To perhaps be somewhat emotional about it, it just doesn't seem right that the value of a human life is so strongly dependent on their economic class in American society.

The unfortunate thing about US style "democracy" is, money and vested interest run the show ...... It's going to take a huge and unrelenting public ground swell to get a single payer system past the MEGA funded vested interests and their bought and paid for shills ('elected' representatives) ..... money talks and the entrenched beneficiaries of the current for-profit system will not go away easily.

Almost everyone (except the big medical providers)thinks universal healthcare, but support erodes when it comes to how to pay for it. This effort is doomed to failure unless they figure out how to cover the $1 Trillion price tag over the next 10 years. So, how do you do it? Cut defense, cut back on illegal immigrant benefits, cut back government pension and benefits? Washington better figure this out soon or it will be another 10 years of talking about it...

As a teacher named Maitreya says, allowing market forces to run the world creates disaster. "Market forces mean one surrendurs. The Self is made to surrender to the unknown forces of life with a view to maximizing profit. Market forces generate possessiveness"..."the essense of market forces is greed and separatism". Soon Maitreya will begin speaking to humanity on the need for a serious transformation in so many realms of living - including healthcare. It must be declared a HUMAN RIGHT for ALL people. You can be sure Maitreya will inspire many, many more to demand their leaders end this current corrupt practice of profit before people.

Great piece Dr; Flowers, Unfortunately, Americans still have a long way to go before they realize they've been going down the wrong path for decades. We have the best government money can buy and lobbyists have enough money to spend to make even Solomon blush with envy. The large hospital and pharmaceutical corporations will do everything they can to stay profitable and with positive cash flow for their bosses, the shareholders. They care nothing for the average citizen.

Babylonbybust 2009-06-21

Thank you Dr. Flowers for your eloquent and intelligent advocacy..Universal healthcare/single payer is the intelligent, logical and ethical option..http://unionsforsinglepayer.org/union_endorsers..
