ANP: Calm political protest turns chaotic as Denver police use pepper spray and batons on trapped crowd
American News Project: A calm political protest quickly turned chaotic as anxious Denver police surrounded protestors peacefully marching toward the Democratic National Convention Center. After trapping the crowd between two buildings, hundreds of officers used pepper spray, batons and unwarranted aggression. After being surrounded for 20 minutes, two ANP producers managed to escape after recording the whole affair.
We can all sit in our safe, or maybe not so safe, places while on line viewing and commenting on the situation that is growing. What I wonder is: if this was the reaction too 2,000 people gathering to voice their opinion what would have happened if it had been 50,000 or over 100,000 people as it was in the 60s and 70s? Remember one important thing about politics now, both sides lie about each other and too all of us. It is called the Political Machine for a reason, and it's not a good thing. It has become, but should not be, "a choice of the lesser evil of two," so don't get distracted by the magic show or the party labels. Seek the truth, learn to take action, especially when it means you may have to get off your seat. Our rights are being eroded bit by bit, hidden from the masses by controlling the release of information, disinformation and distraction. I feel pride, American pride when there are people like those in Denver and The Real News taking action for our rights.

For an historical lesson on how to outflank the police, activists might want to read Storming Seattle by Paul de Armond in the Albion Monitor online archives.

A friend reminded me of what happened over 30 years ago, how hauntingly similar this is getting to be. We no longer have the right to express our dissatisfaction with our abusive government, because this is certainly abusive treatment. I was told a radio announcer made the comment that the protestors got what they deserved because they should not have been protesting. So now a radio host has the right to misinterpret the rights of the people. I don't suppose that idiot realizes that his right to free speech would get his ridiculous comments forever off the air.
I am impressed with the protestors and I applaud their zeal for standing up for what they believe in, and for demanding their rights, for demaning that they be heard.
I wonder, who would have been held responsible if a person, unassociated with the protest, had a heart attack and died due to the stress of the situation?

The First Article of the Bill of Rights enumerates two additional UNALIENABLE Rights glaringly omitted from the beginning of the video. They are the Right to practice religion free from state interfernence and the Right to petition for redress of grievances. If you don't suspect omissions like this as indication of an underlying agenda, you're either asleep or dead.

What does the The Constitution of the United States of America have to do with the egregious conduct by Denver police? See the CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE OF COLORADO, specifically ARTICLE II, Sections 1, 3, 7, 10, 13, 21, 24, 25, 28. Sue them individually and personally for violating Rights under color of law. Take their cars, trucks, homes, kids' college funds.

So let me get this straight...wage a war on terror by strip searching grannies at airports while opening our southern border wide open. Send 'CONdi' to castigate the russians about Georgia. Bush belittles China about free speech not allowed at the Olympics.
Smells like another big deception swinging our way.
No King but King Yahshua, Jesus Christ!
I guess they figure if they squeeze us hard enough, we'll sell our souls for a crust of bread and crumby con job of a new world hourderve'.
Looks like it's working.

I have lived in Denver for about 12 years. This is absolutely nothing less than i expected. Anytime there is a problem between crowds and police here in Denver its a result of the police departments aggresion. I was downtown after the Broncos won the super bowl and while stuck in traffic, in the absence of violence or aggression, the police dressed just are they are in this video (sans name plates) launched tear gas into the middle of the nearest intersection. They also used tear gas at a Mile High Stadium during a college football game. Like I said I am not suprised in the least, this is exactly what I expect from the police here.

I expect Barack Obama will serve America with as much distinction as Condoleeza Rice and Clarence Thomas.

Looks like business as usual at the DNC. I wouldn't hold my breath on Obama making any comments to the obstruction to free speech outside his special ceremony.

Americans have the right to peacefully protest. This is bullshit.

I sit here in shock watching the way people are treated exercising their rights as americans. Sure doesn't seem like a free country.
TEXT ON SCREEN: "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble." —US Constitution
Deeply Divided in Denverby Davin Hutchins & Mike FritzCALL AND ANSWER: Tell me what a police state looks like. This is what a police state looks like.TEXT ON SCREEN: Less than an hour earlier... On the first day of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, thousands gathered in a Denver park for a peaceful protest.MAN: There are a lot of people here that are against Obama, and that's the reason why: because he represents the interests of the ruling class.SPEAKER: [inaudible] you know what? I think it's great, Barack Obama, but you're not my president.WOMAN: You know, they're disappointed with the idea of voting for the lesser of two evils. You ask them why he voted for the FISA bill, why he funded the war, why he reinstated the Patriot Act, why he gave retroactive immunity to these corporations that illegally spied on the US. I respect that people want some hope, and that's what the conversation always ends up with: "I just really hope he kind of pares down what seems blatantly fascist under the Bush regime."TEXT ON SCREEN: The city of Denver restricted protesting, allowing only official areas far from the convention center. Police were deployed all over Denver to ensure things didn't get out of hand. Once the crowd began to march toward the convention center and police barricaded them... things got out of hand. Two ANP producers were there.WOMAN: This is America! America! What are you doing?TEXT ON SCREEN: After getting blockaded, the protesters took an alternate street to the convention center. The police surrounded the protesters on two sides and didn't let them escape for two hours.~~~INTERVIEWER: You followed the crowd all the way from the park. What happened?MIKE FRITZ, ANP PRODUCER: It was a massive crowd. It kind of reigned, chaos. The cops kind of closed everybody in here. I don't know if people are even going to be able to get out.~~~MAN: They're putting on their gas masks like they're going to teargas us while we're surrounded on fucking all three sides. We've done nothing except for march down the street, which is our fucking right.DAVIN HUTCHINS, ANP MANAGING PRODUCER: The cops have surrounded the crowd right now so they can't escape. They're provoking the crowd.~~~MAN: [inaudible] protesting [inaudible] stand on the sidewalk, hand out leaflets.INTERVIEWER: Yeah, and you got trapped between these two police walls?MAN: Exactly.MAN: That's what happened to me. I came down just to see what was going on. Now we're trapped.~~~INTERVIEWER: You guys got to, like, let some people out or escape or something. POLICEMAN: No way.INTERVIEWER: You're just going to arrest all 2,000 people?~~~WOMAN: Let us the fuck out!CALL AND ANSWER: Whose streets? Our streets!HUTCHINS: Alright. They kicked the press out. (They're right behind you, Mike, right behind you, Mike.) They've already kicked out the official press. They used paintballs and pepper spray on people. ~~~POLICEMAN: Go ahead, straight that way.HUTCHINS: I'm being escorted out. Yeah, they just [inaudible]. Everyone's escorted out. There's still about ten protesters surrounded there.POLICEMEN: Go! Go! Keep going! Keep going! [inaudible] interfere with the police. Keep going guys. Let's go.HUTCHINS: You guys have made real big news today.DISCLAIMER:Please note that TRNN transcripts are typed from a recording of the program; The Real News Network cannot guarantee their complete accuracy.
