Robert Rosenthal: Embracing new forms of journalistic storytelling

The executive director of the Center for Investigative Reporting discusses new ways to reach more people.

biography

Robert Scheer is the editor-in-chief of Truthdig. He's also a professor at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, and host of the KCRW podcast Scheer Intelligence. For decades, Bob was the national correspondent, and then columnist, for the Los Angeles Times. He's the author of many books, including The Great American Stickup, The Pornography of Power, and most recently They Know Everything About You: How Data-Collecting Corporations and Snooping Government Agencies Are Destroying Democracy.

A former executive editor for the Philadelphia Inquirer and managing editor for the San Francisco Chronicle, Robert Rosenthal says "fake news" has actually been around for decades, but that the Internet has become a particularly effective tool for government propaganda. The veteran journalist discusses working for the New York Times when it published the Pentagon Papers. He recounts his harrowing experience of being detained while reporting in Uganda. Rosenthal says the variety of platforms available now for investigative reporting makes it an especially exciting time to be a journalist.
