VOICEOVER: Pakistan's Parliament elected former speaker of the house Makhdoom Yousaf Raza Gilani as the new prime minister. Gilani is a member of the Pakistan Peoples Party and was a loyal aide to slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto. Running against Musharraf's choice, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, Gilani took 264 votes to Elahi's 42. Musharraf sent Gilani to prison for four years on allegations he abused his authority as speaker in the 1990s. His convictions were overturned, and he was freed in 2005.

    (CLIP BEGINS)

YOUSAF RAZA GILANI, PAKISTANI PRIME MINISTER (SUBTITLED TRANSLATION): I want to thank the people of Pakistan for the mandate they have given, that all four provinces have given. I will give immediate orders to release the arrested Supreme Court judges.

    (CLIP ENDS)

Deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was released on Monday night and made his first public appearance in four months. He had been under house arrest since Musharraf's purge of the judiciary in November, a move taken to prevent legal challenges to his disputed presidency.
