Torture Accountability Action Day David Swanson: Only by prosecuting torture can we end it June 29 - Human rights groups gathered last Thursday across America as part of Torture Accountability Action day with signs demanding the Obama administration to indict former Vice President Dick Cheney and other consiprators of the torture program. The rally, which included groups like the National Lawyers Guild, VotersforPeace.us, and The Wisdom Fund, occurred a day before the Obama administration came out with an executive order that will permit the indefinite incarceration of terror suspects. "There's an idea that it's all going to go away," David Swanson of Democrats.com told TRNN about how the torture program at Guantanamo Bay has been received in Congress and by the Obama administration. "The problem with that is that increasingly, there are reports of ongoing torture." A recent WorldPublicOpinion.org poll asked 805 Americans about banning torture. In the poll, six in ten respondents agreed with a complete ban on physical torture for the purposes of obtaining information. Swanson says that it is the number of how many Americans unaware that torture is illegal that concerns him. "We have people putting politics ahead the rule of law," Swanson says of the roundabout manoeuvres around addressing torture in government. "Nothing needs to be done to make it illegal. It is, has been for many years illegal, under our law and international law. Only by prosecuting it can we end that." To view the complete video, please click here.
