| GRITtv: Nurses Continue to Protest Senate Healthcare Hearings | |
| Geri Jenkins, a registered nurse and co-president of the California Nurses Association, brings us up to date on continuing protests against the exclusion of single payer advocates at Senate Finance Committee hearings on healthcare. As the hearing began 25 protesters stood and turned their backs to the senators. They were wearing signs that called on congress to pass a single payer system. "Nurses say patients first," the signs read. "Pass single payer." Though most of the protesters left after about five minutes, a few remained to voice their opposition. Two nurses and three physicians were arrested. | |

| In New York, A Joyous Gathering | |
| May 13th marks the 17th anniversary since the Falun Gong meditation practice was first taught to the public. New Yorkers marked the day with celebrations in Union Square. A colorful celebration in New Yorks Union Square. Its to commemorate the day of May 13, 1992 when the practice of Falun Dafa was first spread in Changchun, in Northeast China. [Levi Browde, N.Y. Falun Dafa Association]: Celebrations like this are going on worldwide, all this week, to represent World Falun Dafa Day. Falun Dafa is also called Falun Gong. Its a Chinese spiritual practice, with adherents estimated in the tens of millions worldwide. But its also a kind of global community, defined by shared culture and beliefs. There are the slow-moving qigong exercises, which practitioners say bring health and tranquility. Theres a shared dedication to living by the principles of Truth, Compassion, and Forbearance. And there are events like today, when members of this far-flung community gather at spots around the globe to celebrate their practice and other aspects of traditional Chinese culture. Tens of millions practice it worldwide, though in China, they often have to do so secretly: The countrys Communist authorities have been persecuting Falun Dafa practitioners since 1999. This holiday, Falun Dafa Day, was first celebrated the year the Communist Partys persecution began. In a way, it symbolizes the practices continued spread and its peaceful, non-political nature. [Tony Avella, New York City Councilman]: The fact that this is going on across the world today and this is the tenth anniversary in New York City—Im just here to say that I stand with the Falun Dafa practitioners; to say you have a right to practice your beliefs. NTD, New York. | |
