| Bruce Fein Rips Obama's Indiffernce to Torture at NPC | |
| A press conference was held, on Monday, June 29, 2009, in the Murrow Room of the National Press Club, in Washington, D.C. It featured Kevin Zeese, Executive Director of VotersforPeace.US; Bruce Fein, former Associate Deputy Attorney General under President Ronald Reagan; and Shahid Buttar, Director of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee. The trio presented formal Complaints against alleged t"orture architects" CIAs Acting General Counsel, John Rizzo, and DMI lawyer, Jonathan Fredman, according to the organizers press release. They demanded that the accused lawyers, who are both still working for the federal government, be fired and disbarred. Mr. Fein also ripped into President Barack Obama for his indifference to torture. He said: "We have an instance where the President of the United States--Harvard Law Review--Chicago Constitutional Law professor--he knows what the rules of law means--shuts his eyes to open confessions--we authorized torture, for which [under the Law], there is no exception." | Obama's Child Soldiers: Canadian Omar Khadr & Mohammed Jawad | |
| President Obama has temporarily halted the military commission trials at Guantanamo while they are reviewed. But if they aren't disbanded, the U.S. will oversee the first trial of a child soldier accused of war crimes since World War II. This video shows why President Obama must end the unconstitutional military commissions once and for all, and why he must bring the United States back in line with the treaties it has signed regarding the treatment of juveniles who have been recruited or used in armed conflict. Here is some background: Canadian citizen Omar Khadr was 15 years old when he was captured in Afghanistan in the midst of a firefight that seriously injured Khadr and resulted in the death of a U.S. solider. Khadr was sent to Guantanamo where he was been held for 7 years -- one-third of his life. He was beaten, subject to painful stress positions and even used as a human mop after he urinated on the floor during one interrogation. Under these conditions, the prosecution of Khadr raises grave concerns about the rule of law. Ending the military commissions will also spare ACLU client Mohammed Jawad from trial in an illegal system. Jawad was sent to Guantanamo after he was captured at about age 16 at the scene of a grenade attack in Afghanistan that injured two U.S. soldiers. Afghan authorities threatened Jawad with his death, and that of his family, if he didn't confess to the attack. Based on the resulting false confession, Jawad was transferred to U.S. custody where he was further abused. Among other forms of cruel treatment he suffered at Guantanamo, Jawad was subjected to the so-called frequent flyer program, where he was moved every few hours -- 112 times over two weeks -- to deny him sleep. It was produced for the ACLU by Joel Engardio. | |

| The Cove Trailer | |
| Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, The Cove follows a high-tech dive team on a mission to discover the truth about the international dolphin capture trade as practiced in Taiji, Japan. Utilizing state-of-the-art techniques, including hidden microphones and cameras in fake rocks, the team uncovers how this small seaside village serves as a horrifying microcosm of massive ecological crimes happening worldwide. The Cove exposes not only the tragedy of dolphin slaughtering in Japan, but also the dangerously high levels of mercury in dolphin meat and seafood, the cruelty in capturing dolphins for entertainment, and the depletion of our oceans fisheries by worldwide seafood consumption. We also see how the mandate of the International Whaling Commission has been manipulated by the Japanese Fisheries Agency for its benefit and its subsequent effect on the rest of the world. | |
