Debate: Is Obama Admin Endangering U.S. Environment, Public Health With Retreat on Smog Standards? |

Obama said he made the decision in hopes of reducing regulatory burdens for businesses in a time of economic uncertainty. The move was seen as a major victory for polluters and some business leaders, and another setback for environmentalists. Think Progress' Faiz Shakir: Fear, Inc Report Exposes So-Called Experts & Donors Behind Islamaphobia in US |
| Uploaded by democracynow on 6 Sep 2011 DemocracyNow.org - A new report by the Center for American Progress called, "Fear Inc: The Roots of the Islamophobia Network in America," shows how a small group of self-proclaimed experts backed by a host of donors are spreading fear and hostility toward Muslims in the United States. According to the report, these so-called experts peddle Islamophobia in the form of books, reports, websites, blogs, and carefully crafted anti-Islam talking points. It also notes that right-wing Norwegian murderer Anders Breivik repeatedly cited these "experts" in his so-called "Manifesto." Among those the report highlights is Robert Spencer, author of a blog called, "Jihad Watch," and leader of the group, "Stop Islamization of America," which coined the term "Victory Mosque at Ground Zero" to refer to a local effort to build a moderate Islamic center in New York City, turning it into an international spectacle. Democracy Now! speaks with one of the report's authors, Faiz Shakir, Vice President of the Center for American Progress and Editor-in-Chief of ThinkProgress.org. "[Spencer] basically wants a society in which we are concerned about the presence of all Muslims in America," says Shakir. "This is the running theme of all in the Islamophobia network." | |

The report accuses Israel of "excessive and unreasonable" force in its attack on the ship, Mavi Marmara — which killed nine people — and says Israel should issue a statement of regret and compensate the families of the dead as well as wounded passengers. But it also chides passengers aboard the Marmara and the other flotilla ships for what it calls a "reckless" attempt to breach Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip. In a major development with broader implications, the U.N. report concludes that the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip is legal under international law. Mortgage lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac lost more than $30 billion after the banksters hustled them into buying these piles of mortgage junk - and now the government is coming to collect. But I'm going to ask them to hold off for just a little bit on filing this lawsuit - because it just so happens - I'm holding my own trial against the banksters tonight - as well as a slew of other corporate criminals. | |
