| lauraflanders | 14 January 2011 | As everyone probably knows, the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed in Memphis in 1968 by an assassin's bullet, but it's often forgotten that he was in Memphis joining the sanitation workers' fight for fair wages and working conditions. King's support for labor, particularly low-wage public workers, was a theme of his work for most of his life, and to honor that legacy, we bring you a segment of the speech he gave to those workers the day before his death. | Fear of disease epidemic haunts Sri Lanka flood victims | |
| AlJazeeraEnglish | 14 January 2011 | At least 27 people have been killed in Sri Lanka after days of heavy rain wrecked havoc mainly in the country's eastern province. The counrtys Disaster Management Center said on Friday that the number of people reported missing stands at 12. Heavier-than-normal monsoon rains since early January have caused dams and reservoirs to burst, swamped roads and set off mudslides. More than a million people have been affected by the floods and mudslides, including 363,000 who have been forced from their homes. Concerns about the spread of waterbrone disease, including typhoid, are also growing as the floods caused sewage lines to overflow. Al Jazeeras Minelle Fernandez reports from the eastern port city of Batticaloa, which has been hit the hardest, where people are taking refuge wherever they can. Jan 14, 2011 | |
