| Hot, soon! Author, Mark Hertsgaard: Nuclear power will make climate change worse, not better | |
| [quote]At a time when we are cutting health care, education, old people from the budget, we want to put $54 billion in loan guarantees for nuclear power plants that, why do we need loan guarantees? Precisely because Wall Street won't touch those investments. And they're doing it in the name of fighting climate change,[end quote] says Mark Hertsgaard, longtime environmental reporter. [quote]Nuclear power will make climate change worse, not better,[end quote] he argues. Mark joins Laura in studio to check in about the ongoing nuclear disaster in Japan and this week's PowerShift conference, where young people will push politicians to get serious about the climate future. | American: The Bill Hicks Story -Interview with directors of new documentary | |
| Comedian Bill Hicks [quote]was really obsessed in some ways with the idea of getting people to think for themselves, confronting them with ideas they might have on a big subject,[end quote] says filmmaker Matt Harlock, one of the directors of the new documentary American: The Bill Hicks Story. Hicks died in 1994, but his influence lives on in today's political comics and his critiques of the first Iraq war sound remarkably prescient years later. Matt Harlock and Paul Thomas join Laura in studio to discuss their film, Hicks' work, and why political comedy remains so important. | |

| US Congress passes budget deal | |
| From: AlJazeeraEnglish | 14 Apr 2011 The United States Congress has given its stamp of approval to a divisive budget compromise that averted a government shutdown last week. While the deal pledges a $38 billion cut in spending, however, a bipartisan congressional group says that the cuts will likely amount to only between $20 billion and $25 billion. Moreover, once government spending on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq is factored in, rather than falling, the budget deficit is set to rise. Al Jazeera's Kimberly Halkett reports from Washington, DC. | |
