Climate Activists: Durban Deal is Very Weak Agreement, Lacks Ambition, Equity, Justice |
| Uploaded by democracynow on Dec 12, 2011 DemocracyNow.org - The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa, has ended with an agreement to start negotiations for a new legally binding climate treaty to be decided by 2015 — and to come into force by 2020. Negotiators also agreed to a second commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol and the initial design of a Green Climate Fund. Many environmental groups say the agreement does not do enough to deal with the climate crisis. "It is really not the important milestone in building a climate regime that many have called it -- including the United States and the European Union," says Kate Horner, a policy analyst at Friends of the Earth International, on Democracy Now! Dec. 12. "Instead, what it is, is a further milestone in a very long history of the wealthy world backtracking on their existing promises and reneging on existing obligations. The platform will delay action for five to 10 years while a new treaty is being negotiated and ratified. It will lock in the low levels of ambition, and really, I think the most damaging part of it is it's an attempt to shift the burden of this problem on to developing countries who have contributed less." The outcome of the U.N. climate summit could be especially damaging for Africa. "Africa is off the map, yet Africa is the [continent] that is going to burn because of the indecision and the weak decisions that have come out of this gathering here in Durban," notes Bobby Peek, director of groundWork, a South African-based environmental justice organization. |

Occupy MN Prompts Clergy to Oppose Home Foreclosures |

David Snyder of Jewish Community Action ? and an organizer of the interfaith Northside Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) press conference at Shiloh Temple today that called on banks to work with homeowners in foreclosure ? said that the Occupy movement has given NCRC and religious leaders a shot in the arm to speak out against the crisis. "Occupy MN has pushed us to think broader and to think of new tactics," said Snyder. "It has opened up political space to make broader demands. It's a critical movement. We're grateful that they're putting their bodies on the line to make the space for us to articulate these demands." Five prominent religious leaders, and one North Minneapolis homeowner who narrowly avoided foreclosure, shared the podium at Shiloh Temple on Tuesday. They were Bishop Richard Howell, Revs. Jerry McAfee, Dwight Seawood and Paul Slack, Vic Rosenthal of Jewish Community Action and homeowner Cathy Spann. Shiloh Temple is on Broadway in the heart of North Minneapolis, a neighborhood decimated by poverty, over 5,000 foreclosures since the housing crisis began in 2007, and a tornado on May 22. "We're about the poor, the needy, we're about anybody here," said Bishop Howell of Shiloh Temple. "Anybody who comes through these doors from the north side. That's what we do, and we do it best." "We try to minister to the whole person ? spirit, soul and body," said Rev. McAfee, who connected Cathy Spann with NCRC, and helped her keep her home. "But it's hard for me to speak to your spirit when your mind is on where you'll be sleeping the next few days." McAfee said that church attendance and donations have decreased on account of the foreclosure crisis. With respect to Occupy MN, David Snyder added that community reinvestment coalitions like NCRC and the Occupy movement can compliment each other, though one may be more radical and one more traditional. "A movement like (Occupy) can push the whole dialogue around income equality, around equity, around financial discrimination. We get a lot more power at the negotiating table if stuff like this is happening at the street level." "They're very different approaches," agreed Anthony Newby of MN Neighborhoods Organizing for Change, which has been at the forefront of the local Occupy Your Home movement. "The organization model typically works through proper legal channels, has detailed discussions about the minutea of the loan documents and timelines and gets the banks to honor their commitments on paper." "Our approach is more radical, it's a moral argument. The most important thing is keeping people in their homes across the board." |

Frustrated Occupiers Mic Check County Board: Changing the National Dialogue |
| Uploaded by UpTakeVideo on Dec 13, 2011 OccupyMN has had a number of disagreements with county officials. Since the occupation began on October 7, there have been a number of attempts to remove the protestors from The People's Plaza ( also known as the Hennepin County Government Plaza). The protestors have argued that they are just exercising First Amendment rights. In response, Hennepin County's Board has created new rules aimed at discouraging the occupation. The frustration boiled over at the Hennepin County Board's last meeting of 2011 when a dozen or so OccupyMN supporters interrupted the board meeting with a "Mic Check." Mic Check began with Occupy Wall Street when the the City of New York forbade the use of sound systems. The participants echo the statements of the speaker starting with the opening statement of, "Mic check,", often in waves until the entire crowd is covered. It has been used many times as a disruptive action in meetings and events, most recently last week in the US House of Representatives. The OccupyMN group was quickly removed without incident by county security officers. Most of the hundreds of Occupy sites nation wide have had or are facing similar disputes. The most dramatic event locally occurred on December 6 when Sheriff's deputies swept the plaza and removed everything. A Minnesota District Court ruling on November 21 affirmed the right of the group to post signs on the plaza. The replacement of signs on December 11 was triggered by the December 6 removal. A suit filed on November 21, 2011, by the Minnesota ACLU in behalf of OccupyMN challenges the use of trespass notices as a, "back-door approach to end the occupation." The orders prohibiting sleeping on the Plaza is seen by some as a draconian attack on the homeless. Occupy activists promise continued legal and public action to defend the 99%. |
