| Six Nations Sign to Protect Coral Reefs | |
| Leaders of Indonesia, the Philippines, East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, and the Solomon Islands met on the Indonesian Island of Sulawesi today. They've come together to sign the Coral Triangle Initiative. It's an attempt to protect ocean resources such as reefs, fish and food in the area. The Coral Triangle is seen as the world's richest center of coral reef bio-diversity. [Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesian President]: "Our six countries have formally recognized that the Coral Triangle is the very center of marine life abundance and marine life diversity on the planet. And over 100 million of our citizens depends every day on this critical marine resources for their income, their livelihoods, their food security, and the protection of their coasts." The Initiative was announced at the Bali Climate Change Conference in 2007. Coral reefs around the world are in peril. People are damaging the delicate marine ecosystems and endangering some one million species of animals and plants that call the coral home. The six member states and donor countries, including the US and Australia will contribute to the Initiative. | |
