| A milestone in Sri Lanka. The president has declared the country's 25 plus year civil war over. Here's more. Special news brought to the nation of Sri Lanka. Army officers encircle what appears to be the body Velupillai Prabhakaran - the founder and leader of the Tamil Tiger rebels and the architect of a 26-year civil war which claimed the lives of more than 70,000 people. Among the grim footage broadcast on state television, a dog tag bearing the serial number 001. There's been no independent confirmation. The Tamil Tigers have dismissed reports their leader is dead. On the website Tamilnet, international spokesmen for the group insisted Prabhakaran was alive and safe and that the struggle for a homeland would continue. Military forces first reported Prabhakaran's death on Monday. Officials say he was killed trying to leave the war zone in an ambulance.Prabhakaran had always vowed he'd never be taken alive. With the rebel leader apparently dead - the president has declared the country liberated from terrorism. In a speech to parliament on Tuesday, Mahinda Rajapaksa said his troops had freed the nation and the country was unified for the first time since 1983. On the streets of the capital Colombo, scenes of jubilation as the news begins to sink in.Drivers parade the city centre waving the national flag. The government may have declared the war over, but it now faces a humanitarian crisis. In the past four months of the conflict, around 250,000 civilians have been displaced. The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki Moon, is expected to visit the region in the coming days. Meanwhile European Union officials have called for an inquiry into alleged war crimes. | |
