| France Urged to Pay $40 Billion to Haiti in Reparations for Independence Debt | |
| Democracy Now! 17 August 2010 According to the UN-sponsored Haiti Reconstruction Fund, only two countries?Brazil and Estonia?have paid the fully pledged amount. The United States, France, Canada and many others have failed to send their pledged aid. A recent review by CNN found that just two percent of total pledges have been delivered to Haiti. Calls are now growing for another form of payment to Haiti: reparations. This week, a group of prominent academics and activists published an open letter calling on France to repay an (quote) independence debt it imposed nearly 200 years ago after Haiti successfully won independence from France. Haiti was forced to pay France around 90 million gold francs up until World War II, which after interest and inflation is valued today at up to $40 billion dollars. SEE Pt 2-->> | |

| AlJazeeraEnglish | 17 August 2010 More than two weeks of floods in Pakistan have left well over 1,000 people dead and more than 20 million displaced. And the country is set for more troubled times ahead. The UN has warned that up to 3.5 million children are at risk of contracting water-borne diseases. As many as 300,000 people could contract Cholera - a disease that can spread quickly in areas where the water is contaminated. The first case has been reported and a failure to contain the disease could spell further disaster for Pakistan. So just what will it take to avert this and how are relief agencies being hindered by the growing health crisis? | |

| From: RussiaToday | 16 August 2010 | 2,230 views Loading... The commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan says he is not bound by the July 2011 date set for a troop pull-out. General David Petraeus said he could well advise President Obama not to go ahead if he believes it\\\\\\\'s the wrong time. American public support for the war is at an all-time low, with July being the deadliest month for U.S. and NATO troops since 2001. With frustration growing about the occupation of Afghanistan, politicians in Germany have even suggested talking to the Taliban and terrorist organizations to avoid a further escalation of violence. | |
