| GRITtv: Why Does Newt Gingrich Hate Freedom? | |
| lauraflanders | 19 August 2010 My father died two weeks ago. He was a devout Catholic and former Franciscan brother. The last week of his life he was really upset -- not about dying, but about that church in Gainesville that\\\'s planning to burn Korans on 9/11. My dad thought it wasn\\\'t Christian, but an act of Christian supremacy. I said it would be cute if they used German accents. He didn\\\'t laugh either. | |

| The Hungriest Place on Earth: Southern Sudan faces food crisis | |
| From: AlJazeeraEnglish | 19 August 2010 After 21 years of civil war with the North, the semi-autonomous region of southern Sudan is due, in the coming weeks, to take part in the country\\\'s first democratic elections in a generation. Despite the fact that it is still reeling from a decades-long civil war, the South is widely expected to vote for full independence in a referendum guaranteed under the terms of Sudan\\\'s 2005 peace deal in January 2011. However, recent floods in south Sudan, have left more than four million people on the brink of starvation - an indication of some of the enormous challenges now facing a turbulent, war-ravaged region. | Questions on Iraqi war funds | |
| AlJazeeraEnglish | 18 August 2010 The last American combat brigade has left Iraq, two weeks before Washington\\\'s deadline for an official end to combat operations and more than seven years after the US-led invasion (18 July 2010). But 56,000 American troops remain, most of whom will stay in Iraq until the end of next year, in what the Obama administration says is a military, training and advisory role. The US has spent at least $700 billion on the Iraq war. But that is not counting future interest payments and long-term care for wounded soldiers. There are now also concerns that funds for the reconstruction of Iraq are being misspent. Tom Ackerman has more. | |
