| Mississippi Rejects Bill to Grant Embryos Personhood, Outlaw Fertility Aid, Birth Control | |
| Uploaded by democracynow on Nov 9, 2011 www.democracynow.org - Voters in Mississippi have overwhelmingly defeated an amendment to establish that a fertilized human egg is a person, despite support for the measure from the Republican and Democratic candidates for governor. If passed, it would have made Mississippi the first state to grant constitutional rights to embryo from the moment of conception. Democracy Now! speaks with Diane Derzis, owner of Mississippi's only abortion clinic, the Jackson Women's Health Organization. She notes supporters had hoped to use the Mississippi measure to mount a legal attack on Roe v. Wade, the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that established the right to abortion. "If you make a fertilized egg a person, not only have you banned abortion immediately, you have banned most forms of birth control, as they work by preventing implantation of a fertilized egg. That's very clear. There's no two ways about that," Derzis says. Efforts are underway in at least six states, and at the federal level, to adopt similar laws. | |

| The Story of Broke & The Dumb Choices Being Made For Us | |
| Uploaded by storyofstuffproject on Nov 7, 2011 http://bit.ly/storyofbroke — The United States isn't broke; we're the richest country on the planet and a country in which the richest among us are doing exceptionally well. But the truth is, our economy is broken, producing more pollution, greenhouse gasses and garbage than any other country. In these and so many other ways, it just isn't working. But rather than invest in something better, we continue to keep this 'dinosaur economy' on life support with hundreds of billions of dollars of our tax money. The Story of Broke calls for a shift in government spending toward investments in clean, green solutions—renewable energy, safer chemicals and materials, zero waste and more—that can deliver jobs AND a healthier environment. It's time to rebuild the American Dream; but this time, let's build it better. | |

| Ozone hole above the Arctic five times the size of Germany | |
| Euronews—Oct. 4, 2011-- http://www.euronews.net/ The intense cold at the frozen expanse of the Arctic has opened up an unprecedented hole in the ozone layer. The natural shield is regularly 'attacked' at both the north and south poles, but scientists believe exceptional conditions this year have caused the damage to the ozone layer. The discovery was made by a team of international scientists. They monitored satellite observations between winter 2010 and spring 2011 which showed up the gaping hole, which is five times the size of Germany. Copyright Euronews 2011 | |

| JPMiracle: $2.2 billion immaculate deception | |
| From Forbes: That Missing MF Global Money? JP Morgan Had It : What a week for Jon Corzine and MF Global. In a matter of days MF Global was shopping itself, filed for bankruptcy, couldn’t place $600 million worth of client money, spurred investigations of insider trading and announced the resignation of its CEO, Jon Corzine. Quite a week for the commodities and derivatives brokerage firm. All of that went down after the firm revealed it had $6.3 billion of bets on Eurozone sovereign debt and reported a quarterly loss of $191.6 million last week. Now it seems that $600 or so million has been found. Bloomberg reports that the firm has located $658.8 million of customer money that was deemed missing. It was sitting in a custodial account at JP Morgan Chase, Bloomberg reports. The account actually held over $ 2 billion at the end of October and included both the firm’s and customers’ money. The news comes on the heels of another interesting twist: Corzine’s resignation. The former co-head of Goldman Sachs and former governor of New Jersey is apparently not seeking any severance. He’s also reportedly hired lawyers–just in case this whole bankruptcy thing gets even messier. There aren’t very many answers about why or how that money had been missing, or why it was difficult to locate. Surely the issue will raise further questions about MF Global’s internal controls. It seems, Interactive Brokers, one of the firms that considered buying MF Global’salready had some reservations on that front. Interactive Brokers director, Hans Stoll, told the Washington Post, “The board certainly considered that purchase and stepped away from it at a point where it became clear there were lots of uncertainties about the accounts and segregated funds.” http://www.forbes.com/sites/halahtouryalai/2011/11/04/that-missing-mf-global-money-jp-morgan-had-it/ | |
