| Raw Video: Massive landslide, caused by heavy rain, ruins 150 homes in Bolivia | |
| RussiaToday | Feb 28, 2011 Heavy rains caused a hilltop to collapse in a poor neighbourhood of the Bolivian capital on Sunday, cracking roads, destroying at least 150 homes and burying people's belongings under mud and debris. There were no fatalities despite the significant material damage in the barrio of Callapa, said La Paz Mayor Luis Revilla. People began evacuating late on Saturday when the hill started sliding and cracks appeared in streets and homes, Revilla said. It collapsed completely overnight. By day, residents scrambled over unstable terrain to try to rescue furniture and other possessions from the muck. But continued slides brought down more homes and made salvage efforts dangerous. Slides are common in this mountain city about 11,900 feet (3,640 metres) above sea level, where another hill collapse a little over a week ago destroyed 20 homes. Torrential rains have caused flooding and slides around much of the country in recent weeks, killing at least 44 people according to official reports. | |
