I admire the presenters passion, but this would not be a video I would send out to try to win over good, honest Americans who have fallen for the Republican line and conservative worldview on government and health care. Furthermore, it is just plain wrong to say that [quote]the rest of the world has adopted single-payer health care [end quote] . Only three countries have -- Canada, South Korea and Taiwan. The rest are divided up between national health service systems (real [quote]socialized medicine), like Great Britain and Sweden, or multi-payer systems (where private insurance companies collect premiums and pay bills AT NO PROFIT), like France, Germany and Japan. This is not just an academic question. This lack of awareness clouds the debate here in the United States. The important lesson in fighting here for a universal, public health care that provides uniform, essential services without private profit is that every country develops such a system based on its own particularities, which includes its political and economic systems, and, especially, its social and cultural traditions. Canada did not have the huge, powerful private insurance companies in 1964 that we have in 2011 and went on to create a single-payer system. Meanwhile, Switzerland had such powerful private insurance companies and voted in 1994 for a multi-payer system where these same private companies play a key role in their universal health care system AT NO PROFIT. Both countries had a much higher level of social solidarity and acceptance of government playing a role in peoples lives than we have today after 30 years of constant anti-government propaganda and preaching of good, old American individualism and self-reliance. In fact, our U.S. Medicare system is a purer form of a single-payer than Canadas where its history of decentralized government led them to set up a universal system of standards set by the federal government with administrative powers left in the hands of its 13 provincial and territorial governments. Consequently, benefits coverage has varied from province to province. It is interesting to note that Dr. William Hsiao, the man who designed Taiwans system and was contracted with the State of Vermont to create a government-run system there, came up with a plan for that progressive state that creates a private-public hybrid that has characteristics of both Canada and France. I would hope that we all spend some time studying our own political and economic systems and, especially, our social and cultural traditions, enough so we can come up a universal health care system that best fits our people and wins as much support from good, honest conservative Americans as the Canadian system does from their conservatives. | |
