| RSA Animate - The Internet in Society: Empowering or Censoring Citizens? | |
| From: theRSAorg | 14 Mar 2011 Does the internet actually inhibit, not encourage democracy? In this new RSA Animate adapted from a talk given in 2009, Evgeny Morozov presents an alternative take on 'cyber-utopianism' - the seductive idea that the internet plays a largely emancipatory role in global politics. Exposing some idealistic myths about freedom and technology (during Iran's 'twitter revolution' fewer than 20,000 Twitter users actually took part), Evgeny argues for some realism about the actual uses and abuses of the internet. | |

| Japan declares nuclear no-go zone | |
| From: AlJazeeraEnglish | 21 Apr 2011 The Japanese government has imposed a ban on entering an exclusion zone around the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex. The no-go zone extends 20-kilometres around the facility, and will be enforced from midnight on Friday (1500GMT on Thursday). Residents fled the area after an evacuation was ordered on March 12, a day after a 9.0 earthquake and 15-metre tsunami critically damaged the plant's power and cooling systems. Several of them have since returned for short trips to retrieve their belongings. Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett reports from Tashiwazaki, Japan | |

| Mark Ames and Mike Elk on The Nation Article: Big Brothers: Thought Control at Koch | |
| Democracy Now! 7 Apr 2011 In the new Nation article titled, "Big Brothers: Thought Control at Koch," Mark Ames and Mike Elk report on an urgent letter that Koch Industries sent to most of its 50,000 employees on the eve of the November elections. The letter advised them on whom to vote for and warned them of the dire consequences to their families, their jobs and their country should they choose to vote otherwise. Democracy Now! speaks to Ames and Elk about their investigation. Koch Industries is run by billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch?they have helped bankroll the Tea Party movement and dozens of other right-wing causes. Koch Industries and other corporations are legally allowed to pressure their workers to adopt their political views at the ballot box because of last year's Citizens United Supreme Court decision. The ruling granted free speech rights to corporations and effectively removed regulations preventing employers from politically manipulating their workers. In practice, employers can also fire workers who refuse to attend political seminars or dare to voice their dissenting opinions too loudly.
