Public television is where he has made his home, producing many groundbreaking shows and winning more than 30 Emmy Awards. Moyers has just published a new book, "Bill Moyers Journal: The Conversation Continues," a collection of interviews from his popular PBS show that aired from 2007 to 2010. Click here to watch part 2 of 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xzFavJGFvM "The greatest thing in politics in my time is the transformation of democracy from a citizens society?all that moral agency of all those people in the civil rights movement who stood up against the weight or authority and acted as agents of change?to a consumer society, where most of us our caught up on that treadmill, trying to get more," Moyers says. In a wide ranging interview, he also discusses the state of the public media infrastructure he helped to establish as part of the Johnson administration. "Public broadcasting, which is a place that treats you a s a citizen instead of a consumer is threatened. We must defend it, we must call it back to its heights. Otherwise we are totally at the mercy of corporate power." This is an excerpt from an extensive interview broadcast on Democracy Now! June 8. | Syrians Flee to Turkey As Troops Surround Town | |
| Published on 9 Jun 2011 by AssociatedPress Hundreds of Syrians fled to Turkey on Thursday as elite Syrian troops moved to encircle a restive town ahead of a possible assault. (June 9) From LBN: 1,600 SYRIAN FLEE TO TURKEY : The flow of refugees from northern Syria has turned from a drip into a gusher. After initial reports that residents of Jisr al-Shoughour?a town that?s bearing the brunt of a government crackdown?were leaving the country for neighboring Turkey, the U.N. now says that nearly 1,600 Syrians have entered Turkey. President Bashar al-Assad launched a fierce assault, including about 40 tanks, on the town after alleging that 120 soldiers were killed by protesters earlier this week. ?Jisr al-Shughour is practically empty. People were not going to sit and be slaughtered like lambs,? one refugee said. Turkey has made no effort to stop the refugees, but it and other Western countries are becoming increasingly concerned about violence in Syria?while still remaining reluctant to intervene directly. | |
