Western intelligence reports have accused Iran of shipping vital military aid across Iraq to aid Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his battle against rebel forces seeking to overthrow his government. The report claims the Revolutionary Guard is using land and air routes across neighboring Iraq to send tons of weapons and personnel to aid its ally. In response the US Treasury department placed sanctions on 117 airplanes it says are used for the flights while pressuring Baghdad to help put a stop to the shipments.
