The United States military spends roughly $100 B per year to maintain approximately 1000 foreign military bases around the world, but what role do these bases play? We take a look at one such base on the Korean Peninsula, where the rhetoric of war has dominated recent headlines. According to military analyst and Korean politics expert John Feffer, the US military presence in South Korea exerts a large influence on events at both regional and local levels.

Bio

John Feffer is co-director of Foreign Policy In Focus at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, DC. He is a former associate editor of World Policy Journal. He is the author of numerous books including "North Korea/South Korea: US Policy & the Korean Peninsula" and "Power Trip: US Unilateralism and Global Strategy After September 11".
