Just as Israel has bombed a hospital and a UN compound in Gaza, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni came to Washington, in the dying days of the Bush administration, to sign a new US-Israel agreement barring Hamas from rearming. Meeting with journalists, she had the right to say whatever she wanted about Israel's "war on terror", while paying lip service to civilian Palestinian victims. Journalists for their part were systematically prevented from asking legitimate questions. Pepe Escobar argues that when it comes to media supremacy, at least inside the US, Israel will accept nothing but the upper hand. BioPepe Escobar, born in Brazil is the roving correspondent for Asia Times and an analyst for The Real News Network. He's been a foreign correspondent since 1985, based in London, Milan, Los Angeles, Paris, Singapore, and Bangkok. Since the late 1990s, he has specialized in covering the arc from the Middle East to Central Asia, including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He has made frequent visits to Iran and is the author of Globalistan and also Red Zone Blues: A Snapshot of Baghdad During the Surge both published by Nimble Books in 2007.

Kudos to ANZAC68 for the trenchant remarks. I also like Pepe's use of the term "killing fields" because this really is a bloodbath brought to us by murderous psychos. The fact that they are psychos doesn't become apparent until you notice that almost everything they say is either an obfuscation, dissembling, or an out-right lie and that they seem to be bent on making the Palestinians as miserable as possible, up to and including blowing women and children to bits. | Ten10 2009-01-23
What about talking about how SHE CRUSHED OUR FREEDOM OF PRESS!!!
What?!..Israel can control and deny American right to freedom of press! | ANZAC68 2009-01-21
There seems to be a parallel in methodology of running press conferences when it comes to invasions by the USA and Israel. Anyone else notice the similar schools of thought here?
Create problem, falsely accuse of terrorism, invade defenseless nation, slaughter civilians mercilessly then blame them for being in the way; while the innocent try to survive it all.
This is where we are now, and Zionism seems to be the common factor.
Is there a school for this or do I contract it out? | sfraza 2009-01-21
What i fail to understand is even if the apparently made 90,000 phone calls to Gaza civilians asking them to leave their homes. Where exactly are these civilians supposed to go. Israel has a blockade on one side and Egypt closed its borders. So the only place left to go is UN shelters or the ocean. Civilians went to the UN shelters but Israeli army bombed that too. So was Israeli administration expecting people to roll over and die or maybe drown themselves? This Israeli administration should be charged for war crimes. Gaza catastrophe 09 .. Never again! | mot 2009-01-19
Livni's parents were both irgun terrorists.
try wiki.
pathetic
real news should step up. | Jeff Tundis 2009-01-19
Amazing how Tzipi Livni can lie with such conviction (and a withering stare). I thought there was hope for her, but it seems I was mistaken. | FRTothus 2009-01-18
Every act of aggression and invasion by every power is legitimized by calling it "defense". The Nazis were "defending" Germany when they launched their attacks, as was Russia in their attack in Afghanistan, as was the US when it attacked and decimated Vietnam. Now it is the terrorist state of Israel, guilty of massive war crimes, that is calling its aggression and invasion, its blockades, use of banned weapons, and targeting of civilians "defense". | shanethecrane 2009-01-18
How is the democratically elected Hamas not legitimate? Trying not to hit civilians? I saw a bomb crater that was 40 feet wide and 15 Feet deep. How can you justify using a munitions of that size on a city block where people live and then claim you're trying to be precise? | Jessie 2009-01-18
@RealPirate, Palestine may be a reality someday soon. Ah, yes, but the devil is in the details. Delve deeper into the geopolitics of the so-called two state solution and you will find that Israel intends for Palestine to become a colony, nothing more. Colony: In politics and in history, a colony is a territory under the immediate political control of a state. Palestine's political leaders will be hand-picked and vetted by Israel not voted for via the people, Israel will retain complete control of Palestine's airspace, borders, and on and on (water, never mentioned, is a key issue here). Really, why would the Palestinian people, or any people, accept those terms? Not on their lives or the lives of their oppressors. Hamas is not the key, in or out of the picture. It's the U.S. and its unilateral military support in terms of weapons and money that needs to be out of the picture so that a real Palestinian state may someday be a reality. | RealPirate 2009-01-18
Pepe you are so full it...as for the rest, as much as Israel is wrong on so many issues, this is not one of them...Hamas is not about Palestine, it is about Iran and the Muslim Brotherhoods own self-serving agenda, not the Palestinians. If Hamas is out of the picture, Palestine may be a reality someday soon. | gegenwarst 2009-01-18
By now, anyone who has witnessed the atrocities committed against innocent Palestinians by the IDF in Gaza can recognize that Zionism is indeed a social disease. The comments delivered by Tzipi Livni prove how contiguous and dangerous this syndrome can be. | SeanC71 2009-01-18
This woman said "Israel is acting according to international law and according to our values." So obviously Israel values the death and destruction of innocent women and children. Civilians. As for international law, well, phosphorous weapons were deemed illegal by international law. Therefore she is a liar. Israel has no compassion for any society other its own and the only honest remark she made is proof of this. Israel is the deathtrap of civilization. | Pars 2009-01-18
great video! I can't believe they tried to restrain journalists from asking her tough questions. | DavidV 2009-01-18
Sorry Bolan, maybe TRUTH seems like bias to you. | Bolan 2009-01-18
Coverage seems biased towards the Palestinians. Is your excuse that you can't asked the Hammas leaders why they continue for years to fire rockets at schools and hospitals and children and old people in Israel, because Israel won't let you ask. I'm sorry, but I thought this was supposed to be "The Real News". You sound like biggots to me. Start reporting without your bias! | drcce2001 2009-01-18
Democracy is SO inconvenient isn't it? HAMAS was ELECTED in a contest that was declared free and fair by international observers. The US and and Israel then tried to overturn this democratic decision by installing its quisling FATAH stooges via a coup against HAMAS, but they botched it. Now ex-Mossad spook Livni, the daughter of an Irgun terrorist, says that she will not negotiate with HAMAS. The Zionists are hypocritical, arrogant racist thugs. | rbssj 2009-01-18
Tzipni Livni is the Dana Perino of Israel. Lying fools for their cowardly men. | ned.delaney 2009-01-18
Imagine what the average Bush press conference must have been like. And Bush says he brought democracy to Iraq and Afghanistan?! Question: What shadow government or committee is really functioning behind closed doors that's manifesting wars and controlling world economies for their own benefit? Whose behind this charade of promoting peace? Follow the money and the violations of international law. John Kennedy made a prophetic statement just prior to his assassination regarding this very issue. Will the public awaken in time to demand justice or will they continue to be artificially distracted and not even know it? | a567and8 2009-01-18
Clearly she learned a script that justifies Israel and personifies Israelis as great humanitarians. These "humanitarians" want to teach the Palestinians that "they are a defeated people." If democracy means anything it means that an elected government is legitimate: Hamas was elected by the Palestinians in Gaza. Deal with it.
Israel is empowered to act the way it does by the American government. There must come a time when the U.S. takes the side of the Palestinians to bring about a two-state solution. Israel does NOT want a two state solution; it wants apartheid and holds the American
government hostage in order to establish it. Say this out loud and you are in trouble personally, politically, and professionally. | jimreed 2009-01-18
Israel is always right; everyone else is always wrong.
When will the Palestinians learn their lesson?
They must realize...they must be MADE to realize...in the very deepest and farthest reaches of their collective soul...tat they are a conquered and defeated people. Full Stop.
This is a message from the Israeli assistant to the asistant. | zulu127 2009-01-18
This is great journalism...showing what really happens in press conferences. To watch the looks of Tzipi to her handlers and to the moderator [sic?], Peter, for guidance and control was the most revealing observation I have had as to how propaganda is spun in the Western Media. Thank you Pepe, we need more exposure of the propaganda machinations. | Gabriel White 2009-01-18
Yes. And then there are the cyber-attacks too. Google "Minto Claims Isreali web attack" (NZ Herald). |
